It depends on the council
Each council has its own rules on the size, distances and appearance of outdoor structures. A small canopy over a door and a large roof over a terrace may be treated differently.
The safest way is to ask your council's planning office or a trusted professional (surveyor, architect) before installation.
If you live in a shared building
Check the building regulations: they often set the colours, materials and shapes allowed on the façade. In some cases the owners' meeting must give its opinion.
